Treasure Hunt
A child comes to the river Main in Hanau after a hard argument with his father and tries to cope with his boiling emotions and self-doubts when he finds a message in a bottle in the water with a treasure map. The search leads to himself in beautiful pictures.
Together with amateur filmmaker Thomas Elm and the young Andres Robles (in his debut work), Art Gaviria staged this wonderful morality about childhood, self-doubt and the way to yourself. Although it was shot in 2011, it took until 2015 as a part of the Magomo activity to show his beauty.
2014
No se juega con el mar
The shorty shows the dangers of the sea and what it can mean when you play with these dangers. A child who likes to pretend to have accidents experiences firsthand when something goes really wrong.
Filmed in Cambrills 2014 together with Antonio Gonzales. The rainy pictures could unfortunately not be refreshed in post-production, but maybe they are part of the dark mood of this short story. Although well received towards Latin America, this early work is currently not available on any platform.
2015
Serial Kid
The film was released with the slogan “Look, whom you let into your house!”. The short movie begins as a dialogue about growing up and ends up as a real horror story in the style of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. Excellently played by the young Andres Robles.
Filmed again in Hanau with the team of the later Magomo, this short feature significates an evolution of the images. The first collaboration with the professional DP Carlos A. Madriñan represents a qualitative cut in Art Gaviria’s work.
2015
Math Problems
Andrés Robles plays a teenager with substancial math problems who shows that he has his own way to deal with it. Inspired by Coppola’s “The Godfather”, the feature follows its model in a famous scene with identical staging, script rhythm and camera perspectives.
The pizzeria “Dalla Mamma” in Hanau-Großauheim was the set for this short film study. Although never released, key scenes always appear in the showreels of Andres Robles and Art Gaviria. Here Art Gaviria himself holds the camera.
2016
Time to say Goodbye
A middle-aged businessman goes through his life more or less without scrupul until he realizes that a killer has long been set on him. At the end, his words from the off “I’m the boss here and do what I want” echoed through the scenario become a new meaning.
Exellently played, the contracted killer creates an atmosphere of shudder and shock.
Time to say goodbye was actually planned as a longer feature in the style of Rashomon. The story of the businessman approaching his fatalistic end was intended in three different versions and a prelude. The end would remain open and symbolize that only love and compassion can change the course of destiny. Unfortunately we have only one final filmed, but its absolutely worth watching.
2017
Pobres alemanes
This feature describes how two innocent Colombians visiting Germany get involved in a difficult situation. At the end, some real tact is quite important. Anyone who has been lost abroad can feel whats going on insite the protagonists. Funny, not only for latins 🙂
The first short feature after “Magomo” was actually following a quick idea between Art, Carlos Madriñan and Angela de Goldschmidt. There was less than two hours between the first idea, the script and the completion of the filming. Worth seeing!
2017
El pub, la Pobla y la muerte
What happens when the death arrives at a small village and plays a chess game for the lives of the visitors of a small pub? This is the core scenario of this classic from 2017, shot in La Pobla de Lillet with the outstanding Joan Barnola as “La Muerte”.
The staging is easy, almost like in a screwball comedy. Only at the end it becomes clear that all are playing really for their lives.Very worth seeing and still to be found on Youtube, surely with adecuate english subtitles.
It should be mentioned that we had almost a scandal here when one actor, the late Xisko Armengou died shortly before the premiere under conditions similar to those in the film. Only when it became clear that Xisko himself was a big fan of the production, the premiere was performed in his reminisence.
2020
Vater-Liebe
In the times of Corona it is a big task to deal with many challenges. The protagonist receives the news of the imminent death of his father and tries to fix the broken family relationships. At the end, like always, there is an unexpected turn of the story.
This feature was a nice playground for the skilled Andrés Robles. He catches the viewer from the beginning and lets the following sequences get under the skin. Excellently played in all roles and voices. Presented for festivals and absolutely worth seeing!
